Oil Tankers Back Up Near Yemeni Port After Israeli Air Raids

The maritime industry is facing another challenge in the Red Sea, as a large flotilla of merchant vessels has backed up near Yemen’s Ras Isa port. The congestion is a result of Israeli air raids that damaged the tugboats needed to bring the vessels to shore. In this article, we will explore the situation, its impact on the maritime industry, and the potential environmental consequences.

The Israeli air raids, which took place in late December, heavily damaged several tugs, leaving them out of service for about three weeks. As a result, port personnel are slowly bringing tankers into harbor, causing a bottleneck. According to a worker at the terminal and a senior official in the transport ministry of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, at least 15 oil tankers, some of them carrying Russian fuel, are now clustered at or near the port.

The Port of Vancouver is set to install new navigation aids to enhance safety and efficiency in Burrard Inlet, which is home to 23 of the port’s 29 major terminals. The new navigation aids will also enhance visibility of marine movements in Burrard Inlet, supporting more than $105 billion of annual goods movement.

SOUNION Salvaged: Complex Operation Prevents Major Environmental Disaster in Red Sea

In a monumental effort to prevent an environmental catastrophe, the MT SOUNION, a Greek-owned oil tanker, has been successfully salvaged after being severely damaged by Houthi militants in the Red Sea. The operation, which involved multiple governments, international agencies, and naval operations, marks a significant achievement in maritime security and environmental protection.

The incident began on August 21, 2024, when the laden tanker, carrying approximately 1 million barrels of crude oil, was struck by Houthi-launched anti-ship missiles in the southern Red Sea. The attack disabled critical control systems, leaving the SOUNION adrift. The following day, the European Naval Force’s (EUNAVFOR) Operation ASPIDES responded to an urgent distress call from the ship’s captain. A French frigate, despite facing continued attacks by drones and Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs), safely evacuated all 29 crew members aboard.
