Sumitomo Electric and Van Oord Sign CRA for Shetland 2 HVDC Cable Link

Introduction

Sumitomo Electric Industries and Van Oord have signed a Capacity Reservation Agreement (CRA) with SSEN Transmission for the Shetland 2 project. This initiative is crucial for the maritime industry as it involves the supply and installation of a second 525kV HVDC cable link between Shetland and the Scottish mainland.

Project Overview and Significance

The CRA signing follows the May 2024 announcement selecting Sumitomo and Van Oord as preferred bidders. The cables will be produced at Sumitomo’s new facility in Nigg, Scotland, marking a first for the U.K. in manufacturing cables of this type and technology.

Facility Progress

The 150,000m2 site is progressing well, with piling works nearing completion and factory foundations underway. This facility will be Sumitomo’s flagship for offshore cabling in the U.K. and Europe.
