Sumitomo Electric Industries and Van Oord have signed a Capacity Reservation Agreement (CRA) with SSEN Transmission for the Shetland 2 project. The CRA signing follows the May 2024 announcement selecting Sumitomo and Van Oord as preferred bidders. The cables will be produced at Sumitomo’s new facility in Nigg, Scotland, marking a first for the U.K. in manufacturing cables of this type and technology.

The 150,000m2 site is progressing well, with piling works nearing completion and factory foundations underway. This facility will be Sumitomo’s flagship for offshore cabling in the U.K. and Europe.
